Opal Wearable Sensors Validated in Malaysian Badminton Study

A new study published in Jurnal Teknologi aims to identify crucial kinematics parameters to quantify badminton skill levels and establish a database of good vs. bad movements for injury prevention. The study also mentions the inferiority of video motion capture in field-of-play environments – a situation in which Opals can still record accurate data.

Badminton is one of the top three sports in Malaysia. Worldwide, an estimated 150 million people play the game. Through continuation of this study, Opals can help badminton players improve their techniques, as well as gain accurate objective assessment of skill levels.

The study shines light on the accuracy and usefulness of APDM Opals. Highlights included the stability and validity of the objective measurements recorded, and the experiments conducted in the study will become the references of future experiments on the subject.

Opal Sensors can be attached to a wide variety of body sites, allowing more flexibility to user needs and applications. The ability of Opals to record wireless data means that players do not need to be confined to a lab environment. Portability and timeliness of data capture are only some of the advantages of using APDM Opals. Real-time data streaming is a breakthrough asset that not only negates the need for hours of post-processing, but it has the potential to allow coaches and trainers the ability to use biofeedback to make real-time adjustments to athletic performance.

In the future, it is said that the need for a sensor-based quantitative model for analyzing badminton skill will be assessed. Expectations involve a full training model to improve player skills, with a focus on specific badminton skills like smashing, clearing, dropping, and serving. The continuation of this study will include a more varied Badminton population – from casual to professional players.
